Semaglutide/GLP-1 Vs. Phentermine: Which is Right for You?

Comparing Semaglutide/GLP-1 and Phentermine

People living with obesity face a variety of unwanted health risks, such as hypertension, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. While both Semaglutide/GLP-1 and phentermine are combined with diet and exercise to help with weight loss, there are some distinct differences between the two. Both medications share similar goals; however, they work in very different ways. This article will break down each medication and explain the differences between the two so you can better weigh your options.

Semaglutide/GLP-1

Semaglutide/GLP-1 is a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor antagonist, more commonly known as GLP-1. It is typically sold under the brand names Wegovy and Ozmepic in injectable form and Rybelsus in pill form. Semaglutide/GLP-1 works by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone, which causes your body to produce more insulin, lowering your blood sugar levels and eventually signaling to the brain that you are full.

Typically, these medications are intended for long-term use, meaning that people who suddenly stop taking Semaglutide/GLP-1 may experience weight gain. Semaglutide/GLP-1 can also affect your body’s response to insulin and insulin-releasing medications, so your dosages may need to be adjusted to reduce your risk of hypoglycemia. Another potential complication comes with how Semaglutide/GLP-1 is absorbed into the body. When taken through injections, Semaglutide/GLP-1 may impact the effectiveness of oral medications, including aspirin and other over-the-counter medications.

Phentermine

Phentermine is a sympathomimetic amine that stimulates the nervous system to curb appetite. As an FDA-approved medication for weight loss, it also helps patients limit their thoughts of food and eating, often leading to rapid weight loss. This medication is generally recognized as the US’s most widely prescribed weight loss medication.

Phentermine is commonly sold under the brand names Adipex-P, Lomaira, and Suprenza and is also typically combined with a medication called Qsymia. While it isn’t exactly clear how phentermine reduces appetite, the primary belief is that it increases neurotransmitter levels in your brain. Unlike Semaglutide/GLP-1, Phentermine is only approved for short-term use as the effectiveness may diminish over time. Typically, the medication is prescribed for a 12-week treatment plan. Phentermine is a controlled substance and carries the risk of potential side effects. This medication is not recommended for people with preexisting conditions, such as glaucoma, hyperthyroidism, or a history of extensive cardiovascular disease.

Which Medication Might Be Better for You?

Everyone’s body is different, meaning each body may respond better or worse to either of these medications. The good news is that both medications have been shown to be effective in helping people lose weight. Although there isn’t much research comparing the two directly, a few studies note that injectable Semaglutide/GLP-1 may be more effective than phentermine.

In a 2021 study, it was found that those who injected Semaglutide/GLP-1 saw better weight-loss results than those who took other approved weight-loss medications, including Phentermine. So, while there isn’t necessarily a “right” weight-loss medication specifically for you, Semaglutide/GLP-1 might be best if you are looking for long-term treatment, while phentermine is best for the short-term and a potentially less ambitious amount of weight loss.
