When to Consider Medical Treatment for Premature Ejaculation

When to Seek Premature Ejaculation Medical Treatment

Premature ejaculation occurs when a man has an orgasm earlier than he or his partner desires. This sexual condition can be frustrating and debilitating as it can often lead to a loss of confidence and a range of other sexual performance issues. Interestingly, premature ejaculation is a common problem, affecting 30% to 40% of men. While there are many causes, the most common include physical issues, chemical imbalances, and emotional/psychological factors.

Generally, you should seek medical treatment if it is negatively impacting your life in the following ways:

  • Happening More Often Than You Would Like
  • It’s Causing You Anxiety or Depression
  • It’s Affecting Your Relationship
  • You Almost Always Ejaculate Within One Minute of Starting Intercourse
  • You’re Never Able to Delay Ejaculation
  • You Avoid Intimacy Due to Your Concerns About Ejaculating Prematurely

Fortunately, you aren’t alone when experiencing these symptoms. At Lowcountry Male, we are here to support and guide you to the proper treatment. Read along as we dive into the causes and treatments of premature ejaculation.

Premature Ejaculation Causes

Premature ejaculation has many causes, although many of them are related to a certain degree. In general, all of the causes of premature ejaculation can be bundled into two buckets: physical/chemical and emotional/psychological.

Physical and Chemical Causes

General Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation have many links, which means men can experience both at one time. If you have an underlying erectile dysfunction diagnosis, chances are high that your premature ejaculation has something to do with it.

Hormonal Issues

A hormonal problem with oxytocin levels, which play a vital role in men’s sexual health, can cause premature ejaculation and other sexual function issues. Other hormone levels that can also have an effect include luteinizing hormone (LH) prolactin and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).

Low Serotonin and Dopamine

Serotonin and Dopamine stimulate happiness and general life satisfaction. These hormones also play a role in the bedroom as they are involved in sexual desire and excitement. If their levels are lower, you may experience erectile dysfunction issues such as premature ejaculation.

An Extra-Sensitive Penis

There are cases where a penis might be extra sensitive to stimulation, which causes premature orgasm. In these cases, creams or sprays are often used to dull the sensitive areas of the penis before intercourse.

Emotional and Psychological Causes

Performance Anxiety

A man may experience premature ejaculation if he is nervous about being with a new partner or if he’s having sex for the first time after a long period of abstinence. Additionally, a lack of confidence, guilt, or being overly excited are other issues that may lead to an early orgasm.

General Stress

Stress can cause a buildup of the hormone cortisol, which can negatively impact sexual function. Chronic stress can not only lead to premature ejaculation but also a host of other sexual issues, including performance anxiety and erectile dysfunction.

Relationship Problems

Pre-existing relationship problems can also cause an increase in sexual issues, including premature ejaculation or trouble getting and maintaining an erection. Sometimes, if relationship issues are the root cause of a male’s premature ejaculation, a man can recover if the relationship’s problems are resolved.

Premature Ejaculation Treatments

Behavioral Therapy

Behavioral therapy is often one of the first treatment methods prescribed to patients suffering from premature ejaculation. This type of therapy involves trying different methods to delay your orgasm, to teach your body over time how to control itself and hold in an orgasm.

Various behavioral therapy techniques, such as the start and stop method, are commonly used. This method works by having you and your partner stimulate your penis close to the point of orgasm and then stopping stimulation for about 30 seconds until you regain control of your response. Over time, this method should condition your body to have stronger orgasm control.

Counseling

If the cause of your premature ejaculation is purely psychological, seeking the help of a licensed psychologist or sex therapist might be the best move. Often, a urologist can help direct you to the correct professional, depending on your specific sexual health needs.

Medications

Several types of medications may be used, including antidepressants like Lexapro and Zoloft, which can help to delay ejaculation. Anesthetic numbing creams can also be applied to the head and shaft of the penis to decrease the overall sensitivity. Erectile dysfunction medications are also used, such as Viagra or Cialis, to treat premature ejaculation, particularly in men who already struggle with erectile dysfunction issues.
