Tadalafil vs. Vardenafil: Which Erectile Dysfunction Medication Is Right for You?

Comparing Tadalafil (Cialis & Adcirca) and Vardenafil (Levitra & Staxyn)

The most prominent erectile dysfunction (ED) medications are a group of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5). These medications generally improve blood flow to the body’s tissues, including the genitals. The four most common PDE5 inhibitors on the market include sildenafil, tadalafil, avanafil, and vardenafil.

While most medications on the market today work similarly within the body, there are still a few unique differences. You should always speak with a healthcare professional before deciding on ED medications; however, for comparison purposes, we will summarize the similarities and differences between tadalafil (Cialis & Adcirca) and vardenafil (Levitra & Staxyn) below.

Vardenafil and Tadalafil Differences

  • While both tadalafil and vardenafil are used to treat ED, tadalafil can also be prescribed for pulmonary hypertension (BPH), a condition where an enlarged prostate causes issues with urination.
  • Vardenafil typically takes less time to kick in, but tadalafil can last much longer. Vardenafil may start working within 15-30 minutes and lasts about 4-5 hours on average, while tadalafil usually kicks in within 0.5-2 hours and can last up to 36 hours.
  • Your diet doesn’t typically impact tadalafil, but a high-fat meal, like a burger and fries, can slow down the speed at which Vardenafil starts working—sometimes by as much as an hour.
  • Vardenafil is typically cheaper because it is only available in generic form. Tadalafil, on the other hand, is available in both generic form and as the brand name Cialis, which typically raises its price.
  • While both of these medications come as oral tablets, vardenafil is also available as orally disintegrating tablets that you place on your tongue and let dissolve.

 Vardenafil and Tadalafil Similarities

  • Both medications are PDE5 inhibitors, which treat ED by boosting blood flow to the penis, leading to stronger erections and increased satisfaction.
  • Vardenafil and tadalafil may also help with premature ejaculation (PE), according to some research.
  • Both vardenafil and tadalafil can be taken orally as needed, about 1 hour before you plan on having sex.
  • Both have similar side effects, such as headache, flushing, back pain, indigestion, and congestion. Fortunately, most of these side effects are manageable and temporary.

Which ED Medication is Right for You?

When choosing between vardenafil and tadalafil, you should consider your goals for this type of treatment. If you only plan to use the medication every once in a while when you think you will need it, vardenafil might be right for you. It takes less time to kick in and only lasts about 4-5 hours, meaning it can be used on a case-by-case basis.

On the other hand, if you are someone who wants the medication to work for you at all times, giving you an increased chance for spontaneous intercourse, then tadalafil might be the right medication for you. Either way, you should consult a healthcare professional to determine which medication is best for you.
