Sexual Health and Aging: What to Expect and How to Prepare
Exploring Men’s Sexual Health and Aging
However much we may want to fight, deny, or completely disregard it, aging is a part of life. For men, aging can come with a host of unwanted side effects, such as weight gain, bodily pain, and sexual health issues. While these issues can be annoying, the good news is that they can all be treated. In this blog, we will specifically dive into the world of men’s sexual health and the impact aging can have on sexual function.
What to Expect
As you age, you may notice that you think about sex less often, your erections are less robust, and you may find it harder to be aroused. Fortunately, there are solutions for your sexual health concerns at sexual health clinics like Lowcountry Male. Read on to learn about some common sexual health issues and how they are treated at Lowcountry Male.
Low Testosterone
Testosterone is a hormone that fuels a man’s sex drive, and after age 30, testosterone levels can start to decline. Low testosterone levels can lead to fatigue, muscle loss, body fat, and erectile dysfunction, among many other issues. There are lots of things that can make low testosterone more likely, like diabetes, kidney failure, hormone disorders, and certain genetic conditions. T-levels also have the potential to fall if you gain too much weight or drink too much alcohol.
A blood test will tell you if your testosterone levels are too low. If your levels are low and you are experiencing low-T symptoms, it may be time to consider testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). TRT is an excellent option for men who want to improve their mental, physical, and sexual health. Typically, TRT will come in the form of patches, gels, injections, or long-lasting implants.

Erectile Dysfunction
Not only do your testosterone levels decrease as you age, but the blood flow to your penis also decreases, causing erectile dysfunction. So, with a decrease in blood flow, it then becomes harder to get and maintain an erection. A lack of general physical health also causes ED, so avoiding this problem is another good reason to stay in shape.
Fortunately, there are many treatments for ED. The most common treatments include drugs known as PDE-5 inhibitors, which you will often see under the brand names Cialis, Levitra, Staxyn, and Viagra. These medications help improve blood flow to the penis, making it easier to get and stay erect during intercourse. At Lowcountry Male, we specialize in providing customized treatment plans utilizing these medications to aid our patients toward a better sex life.

BPH: Enlarged Prostate
While prostate growth is a normal part of aging, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is an enlarged prostate and is a serious medical issue. BPH isn’t cancer, but it can negatively impact a man’s sexual life. This condition can often make it difficult to urinate and will also send you to the bathroom more frequently, which can be a frustrating combo.
These symptoms are generally referred to as lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), and studies have shown that LUTS have a connection with difficulty maintaining erections. They also may increase the chances of premature ejaculation in some men.
